EIGHT

It was dinnertime when Nate entered the Banner home later that evening. Gloria sent him to the upstairs bathroom to wash his hands and face. He agreed to wake Liana.

It wasn’t hard to locate her room, and the door was ajar, so he stepped inside. He stopped dead still at the sight of her lovely body spread in sensual abandon on the bed. A violent shudder quaked over his body.

The towel had slipped off her head, and her hair tumbled around her head and shoulders like a fluffy blonde cloud. The sides of her robe had parted to expose a wide stretch of creamy flesh down the center of her body. The soft curves of her breasts kept the fabric anchored, but the teasing glimpse of flesh was more erotic than nudity.

His lungs constricted painfully; his reaction raw and primitive. He wanted her badly, but not just physically. He felt a violent mixture of tenderness, possessiveness, and raging desire. His hunger for her was an emotional and physical challenge beyond his experience.

Stepping closer to the bed, he reached slightly unsteady hands to carefully draw the sides of her robe together. She’d be embarrassed to know he’d seen her in such a vulnerable state. He didn’t want her to be defensive or uncomfortable with him.

He realized, with shocking insight, he wanted Liana to trust him, unconditionally. He wanted it more than he’d ever wanted anything in his life, and that bothered him. They had little or nothing in common, he argued mentally. Their backgrounds were grossly different. There could be no future in a relationship between them.

He sat on the edge of the bed and reached a hand out to gently cup her cheek. She was so soft. His hands were rough, but he couldn’t resist the urge to stroke her smooth skin. He spoke softly to her, and watched her lashes sweep upward to reveal sleep-clouded blue eyes.

“Nate?” Liana thought she must be dreaming. Nate Harden shouldn’t be in her bed. She strained to focus her sleepy eyes on the man beside her. His touch was warm and gentle as he caressed her cheek and neck.

His oh-so-gorgeous eyes were regarding her with unblinking intensity. She couldn’t remember any man ever looking at her with so much undisguised longing. Liquid heat flowed through her body. His expression was mesmerizing, with an exciting combination of tenderness and desire.

“Time to wake up, sleepyhead.” He sunk his fingers into the thickness of her hair and gently combed them through the silky tangles.

Liana watched his lips moving, then watched his eyes as they shifted to her hair. Her breathing was shallow. He was so big and gentle and close. She found she liked having him close. She liked the smell and feel of him. She liked having him touch her. She was afraid to do anything that might break the intimate spell.

Nate knew he should head back downstairs. Instead, he lifted both hands to cradle Liana’s face. The look in her eyes made his blood race.
